Introduction to Data Journalism Workshop in Thessaloniki Concluded

The workshop introduced participants to data journalism and open data, as well as data processing, analysis and visualization.

iMEdD (incubator for Media Education and Development) in collaboration with the Department of Journalism and Media at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTh), held the two-day workshop on the topic: Introduction to data journalism on February 13 and 14, 2023.

The workshop introduced participants to data journalism and open data, as well as data processing and analysis (Google Sheets), and data visualization (Datawrapper, Flourish) applications with hands-on exercises and without the use of code.

The participants were instructed on how to perform automated operations on spreadsheets, how to solve problems such as “cleaning” a dataset, as well as how to create pivot tables. They then learned to analyze the data by using filters and, finally, how to visualize it using online tools.

They also learned how to visualize the data, which they analyzed, to present it to the public in a clear and understandable way.

Fifteen journalists from local and regional media in Macedonia and Thrace attended the workshop, including reporters from Thessaloniki, Kozani, Katerini, Kastoria, Xanthi, and Komotini.

The workshop’s instructors were the data journalists and iMEdD Lab’s Project Managers, Kelly Kiki and Thanasis Troboukis.

*The workshop was held within the iMEdD Local News initiative to highlight the value of local news, the importance of establishing a collaborative culture, the enhancement of content and the quality of journalistic output.
